Several news come to my attention from my reading this morning – there are some serious actions on China’s Internet. I read some posts in V2EX about an announcement on shutting down online BBS and blogger sites before the big meeting is about to start in China. At first I thought it was just some ‘normal’ regulations that required to issue in a certain period but few are actually implemented. But this one is not. If you read a report from cwrblog and a post in Wangjianshuo’s blog, then you can sense that this time there are some real actions.

I can’t feel how serious it’s because I’m currently not in China. But for the last few days several friends asked me through IM to see if I can access to some certain websites, because they couldn’t.

Maybe I have been out from China for too long, such an action starts to make me think ‘This is Crazy!’. Shutting down Data Centre and unplugging servers in a scale of tens of thousands, it’s unthinkable.

Yesterday, in an email with a teacher who is going to join MyShantou.net, we were discussing to write news about Shantou in a more objective and critical view. I said that it’s only safe to do so when our domain and hosting is aboard and not in China, because we just never know when the content will become ‘sensitive’ , or when our blog will be shut down over night for the reason that ‘you are not allow to write blogs in China’. Now the timing cannot be righter to prove my point.

Three years ago today, Gmail launched. And now again, 1st April, Google is going to give out Free Wireless Broadban. This is just crazy! But what’s more, it’s connected through toilet. This sounds really crazy for me. Giving out free wireless, what’s this going to change the world?

Ps 1. Google notebook updated, better interface now.

Ps 2. Found another new services: Gmail Paper

Ps 3. It’s 12:05, 2nd of April now. Except Ps. 1 and Ps. 3, the rest of this post was a 1st April joke:)

A few months ago many delighted voices were surrounding in Chinese blogsphere about the opening of Blogger.com. As you might know, Blogger.com was not accessible in China before because of a wall or something like that. At the beginning many people were still waiting to see if it’s really re-opened in China, because Chinese Internet is like English weather – you never know what’s gonna happen the next day. But after a few weeks, people started confirming that blogger.com was indeed became accessible in China and many signed up for new accounts.

I like blogger’s publishing platform, especially the beta one they launched no long ago. So I encouraged Jenn to give up her MSNspace and use blogger.com. I had one for myself as well, just to wrote some daily random stuff. But when I invited some friends in China to read my blog yesterday, they said they can’t open it. After confirming with other friends, they told me blogger.com is blocked in China, and it’s a few weeks ago.

However blogger.com is not alone, the newly launched Vox, seems also blocked in China. Why? Everybody knows, but I still like to put the question – “WHO KNOWS?’

There are also rumours about some major email like @163.com and sina.com can’t received emails sent from Gmail. It’s not proved yet, but quite a few people try to test it and also a few other people said they can’t received emails from Gmail. I sent an English email to my friend’s 163.com account a few weeks ago, but not yet received any reply yet. But I guess this is more like a business related blocking rather than political one. But again, who knows!

Guess I need to learn how to use proxy when I go back for holiday.
