Use Gmail to deal with all my emails

I guess quite a lot people have more than one email accounts like I do. I had a hotmail account since 5 years ago, a university account and a few Yahoo accounts. And, of course, my Gmail as well. Sometimes it’s necessary to have several separate emails. For example, all my university emails go to my Durham account and I need to reply from that email address to prove I am a Durham student for some special emails. But it’s really a pain on the neck to check every single account one by one. I don’t really trust Outlook because too many people are using it so it became one of main targets of virus. But, Gmail can help me to send and receive all the emails by only using one account! Here are a few tips to share.

For Durham Students:
There is a Mail Filter system in ITS. You can set up a filter rule to forward all your emails to your Gmail. For me, I filter all incoming email to my Gmail and didn’t leave any copies in the durham account, because there is only poor 2M for undergraduate students and it’s totally not enough to me. After that, you can go to Gmail’s Filter option and set up a label ‘University’ to all the mails come from ‘@dur.ac.uk’. This is what I do anyway. Then, you don’t need to go to University Webmail page anymore!

When you want to send an email through Gmail but using your durham address, go to ‘Setting → Account‘ in your Gmail, and you will know what to do. After you finishing verify from durham account, it’s done! You will see the selecting box like the pic above to select the address you want to send from.

For other accounts:
There is a grogram called ‘GetMail‘ allows you to forwarding your hotmail to Gmail. I kind of tried it but you need to install it locally, and I assume that you may need to leave it on to forward mails as well. I don’t really like adding too much small little stuff in my system tray so I deleted it. There is no many important emails go to my hotmail anyway. But it’s maybe useful to some people who might need it.

To send emails from Hotmail, or Yahoo or others, refer the blue font section above. It’s straightforward.

Hope this will help!

Thank you very very much. It’s really helpful. I wanted to do this all along. Just didn’t know university mails could be fowarded.
In my case, I have to use “@durham.ac.uk” as a filter to make it work. So I simply add both “@durham.ac.uk” and ‘@dur.ac.uk’ to the label of “university” just in case.
