Durham: University of the Year

4 years, 345 days ago (October 1, 2005)

I heard this news from an International student social last night. And today when I check my university email, this great news has been sent to celebrate with all Durham students! And I am more than happy to hear that as one of its undergraduate students.

Dear Students

I am delighted to share with you some outstanding news. Durham is named this weekend in the Sunday Times University Guide as University of the Year.

This is an excellent achievement, and it reflects the all-round contribution of staff, students, graduates and other supporters. It is a very timely additional welcome to all new students who are joining us this weekend. It underlines what a good choice you have made.

It is a national accolade to be proud of, and something to tell all our contacts and associates throughout the coming year. It reflects our good name across the country in schools and universities and also confirms us as the North East region’s premier university.  Our engagement in the region is one of our prime strengths in Durham and at Queen’s Campus. We work with schools, business, agencies, councils and other organisations; contribute to the quality of life through music, the arts, heritage work and sport; and play a helpful part in the community, for example, by the work of volunteers in Student Community Action, the fund-raising of
DUCK, and many teaching and research activities.

I want to thank and congratulate everyone for their individual care and contribution. You are responsible for the levels of quality, performance, achievement and outside recognition that the annual survey reflects.
